Sikh social activist Valarie Kaur asks, “What if the darkness [of political turmoil] is not the darkness of the tomb, but the darkness of the womb?” What if a renewed American democracy is waiting to be born through all of us? What does the midwife tell laboring mothers to do? To breathe. And then, when the time comes, to push.
Now is the time to breathe. How are we breathing, taking good care of ourselves so we’ll be ready to push?
Here’s what I’m doing:
–Limiting political emails and issues;
–Gathering info from trusted sources (billmoyers.com for the religious and spiritual perspective; nytimes.com for the political; splc.org, Southern Poverty Law Center, to monitor hate groups and teach tolerance);
–Making weekly calls to senators and representatives;
–Meditating and singing;
–Saying no so I can say yes;
–Remembering I’m a human being, not a human doing.
How are you taking care of yourself? May we support one another in breathing, so we’ll be ready to push, to birth democracy together.
