DESCRIPTION:In August\, our Book Group will be meeting a little earlier than usual to allow for Melissa Valentine to join us to discuss her book\,The Names of All the Flowers. Since we’re meeting early\, please feel free to bring a lunch. \nAbout this month’s book: \nMelissa and her older brother Junior grow up running around the disparate neighborhoods of 1990s Oakland\, two of six children to a white Quaker father and a black Southern mother. But as Junior approaches adolescence\, a bullying incident and later a violent attack in school leave him searching for power and a sense of self in all the wrong places; he develops a hard front and falls into drug dealing. Right before Junior’s twentieth birthday\, the family is torn apart when he is murdered as a result of gun violence. The Names of All the Flowers connects one tragic death to a collective grief for all black people who die too young. \n\n\n“In this poignant\, painful\, and gorgeous memoir\, Melissa Valentine bravely explores what faces black boys and men\, through the eyes of a black woman\, sister\, daughter\, and member of a family whose lives are altered forever\, time and time again. SUMMARY:Writers of Color: The Secrets We Kept
DESCRIPTION:Our September read is “The Secrets We Kept: Three Women of Trinidad” (out now). Author Krystal Sital will arrive at 1:30. \nThere\, in a lush landscape of fire-petaled immortelle trees and vast plantations of coffee and cocoa\, where the three hills along the southern coast act as guardians against hurricanes\, Krystal A. Sital grew up idolizing her grandfather\, a wealthy Hindu landowner. Years later\, to escape crime and economic stagnation on the island\, the family resettled in New Jersey\, where Krystal’s mother works as a nanny\, and the warmth of Trinidad seems a pretty yet distant memory. But when her grandfather lapses into a coma after a fall at home\, the women he has terrorized for decades begin to speak\, and a brutal past comes to light. \nIn the lyrical patois of her mother and grandmother\, Krystal learns the long-held secrets of their family’s past\, and what it took for her foremothers to survive and find strength in themselves. The relief of sharing their stories draws the three women closer\, the music of their voices and care for one another easing the pain of memory.
