SUMMARY:Sunday Service: Brushing the Cat - Rigid Thinking Syndrome
DESCRIPTION:The technical definition of rigid thinking system is\, “difficulty changing mental sets.” Simply put\, this means switching from thinking about things one way\, to thinking about them in a different way. People who can do this are said to have flexible\, as opposed to rigid thinking and brush their cats much differently. \nRigid thinking is generally based on miscommunication and leads to unhelpful emotions. Take prejudice as an example. Prejudices people hold\, i.e. political\, racial\, sexual\, religious\, all have rigid thinking in common. \nThe natural remedy to this situation\, i.e. take a rigid thought and transform it to a more flexible preference\, is much easier said than done. Come on January 6th and learn methods to increase your flexible thinking and brush your cat differently. Start 2019 out on a positive note. Speakers: Emily Williams and Kay Potetz.

SUMMARY:TED Talk: The Gift and Power of Emotional Courage
DESCRIPTION:This topic is a natural segue from our January 6th program\, i.e. Rigid Thinking Syndrome. Psychologist Susan David says the way in which we deal with our emotions drives every aspect of how we love\, how we live\, how we parent and how we lead. “The black-and- white view of emotions perpetuated today — positive or negative — is rigid\,” she says\, “and rigidity in the face of complexity is toxic.” It also tends to be ineffective and unsustainable\, as David’s research on emotional suppression shows that when emotions are pushed aside or ignored\, they get stronger. \nA survey conducted by David showed a third of people either judge themselves for having “bad” emotions or actively try to push aside those feelings. According to the World Health Organization (WHO)\, depression is now the single leading cause of disability worldwide\, ahead of both cancer and heart disease. Our moderator will be Linda Rich. \nJoin us as we continue learning new methods of “Brushing the Cat.”

DESCRIPTION:To honor Black History month\, a tribute to Sally Hemings\, an enslaved African-American woman who’s believed to have had several children with one-time U.S. president Thomas Jefferson will be given at OUUC. She came into Jefferson’s household as part of an inheritance from his wife’s estate in 1774\, and as a child probably served as a nurse to Jefferson’s younger daughter. \nWe’ll wrap up our tribute to Black History month when Vernice S. Jackson\, President of the Board of Directors and Managing Director of Women in History\, brings Ms. Hemings to life in full costume.

DESCRIPTION:Edith Wharton once said\, “There are two ways of spreading light: to be the candle or the mirror that reflectsit.” Writing has allowed Lara Lillibridge the opportunity to be both candle and mirror. She will reflect on how writing can heal us personally and as a society\, the importance of story and how we can help elevate the voices of underrepresented people. \nLara Lillibridge\, our guest speaker\, is the talented author of three books\, Girlish: Growing Up in a Lesbian Home (Skyhorse\, April 2018); Mama\, Mama\, Only Mama (Skyhorse\, May 2019); and is co-editor of an anthology with Andrea Fekete\, entitled Feminine Rising: Voices of Power and Invisibility (Cynren Press\, April 2019).
