SUMMARY:Listening to Marginalized Writers: My Mother Says Drums Are for Boys
DESCRIPTION:About the Book:\nMy Mother Says Drums Are For Boys is a humorous and heartfelt memoir comprised of stories about that middle place where boy and girl collide. Rae Theodore grew up as a young butch (or tomboy\, as it was called back in the day)\, wanting to play the drums\, wear football jerseys like her brother and always be in proximity to Olivia Newton-John. She’s tried to conform to gender norms at different points in her life. She really has. It wasn’t until Rae came out later in life and embraced those things that always made her happy – baseball caps\, flannel shirts\, neckties in every color of the rainbow – that she discovered her authentic self. \nMy Mother Says Drums Are For Boys is required reading for all butches\, genderqueers and other gender warriors and rebels\, as well as anyone interested in looking at gender in a new way.  \nWe’ll meet virtually with Rae\, who for the record\, is still bitter about being forbidden to play the drums and often dreams about going on tour with The Runaways and Joan Jett and the Blackhearts.

DESCRIPTION:The Oberlin congregation is inviting the Olmsted congregation to join them in workshops discussing racism and the 8th Principle. OUUF will be voting in January on whether they will adopt the 8th Principle and as a part of that will be hosting four discussions about the various issues. The discussions will happen immediately after the Sunday services on Zoom. \nThe 8th Principle states:\n“We\, the member congregations of the Unitarian Universalist Association\, covenant to affirm and promote: journeying toward spiritual wholeness byworking to build a diverse multicultural Beloved Community by our actions that accountably dismantle racism and other oppressions in ourselves and our institutions.” \nThe UUA published a report in February 2020 called Widening the Circle of Concern.\, which can be found at: https://www\,uua.org/uuagovernance/ committees/cic/widening \nOberlin will discuss four of the chapters from the report: Here is the schedule:\n– Theology\, October 24th\, 12-1 pm\n– Congregations and Communities\, November 7th\, 12-1 pm\n– Hospitality and Inclusion\, January 9th\, 12-1 pm\n– Living Our Values in the World\, January 23rd\, 12-1 pm.

SUMMARY:8th Principle Workshops
DESCRIPTION:The Oberlin congregation is inviting the Olmsted congregation to join them in workshops discussing racism and the 8th Principle. OUUF will be voting in January on whether they will adopt the 8th Principle and as a part of that will be hosting four discussions about the various issues. The discussions will happen immediately after the Sunday services on Zoom. \nThe 8th Principle states:\n“We\, the member congregations of the Unitarian Universalist Association\, covenant to affirm and promote: journeying toward spiritual wholeness byworking to build a diverse multicultural Beloved Community by our actions that accountably dismantle racism and other oppressions in ourselves and our institutions.” \nThe UUA published a report in February 2020 called Widening the Circle of Concern.\, which can be found at: https://www\,uua.org/uuagovernance/ committees/cic/widening \nOberlin will discuss four of the chapters from the report: Here is the schedule:\n– Theology\, October 24th (complete)\n– Congregations and Communities\, November 14\, 12-1 pm in person at Oberlin UU Fellowship & November 16\, 6:30-8:30 on Zoom\n– Hospitality and Inclusion\, January 9th\, 12-1 pm in person at Oberlin UU Fellowship & January 11th\, 6:30-8:30 on Zoom\n– Living Our Values in the World\, January 23rd\, 12-1 pm in person at Oberlin UU Fellowship & January 25\, 6:30-8:30 on Zoom
