SUMMARY:Writers of Color: The Secrets We Kept
DESCRIPTION:Our September read is “The Secrets We Kept: Three Women of Trinidad” (out now). Author Krystal Sital will arrive at 1:30. \nThere\, in a lush landscape of fire-petaled immortelle trees and vast plantations of coffee and cocoa\, where the three hills along the southern coast act as guardians against hurricanes\, Krystal A. Sital grew up idolizing her grandfather\, a wealthy Hindu landowner. Years later\, to escape crime and economic stagnation on the island\, the family resettled in New Jersey\, where Krystal’s mother works as a nanny\, and the warmth of Trinidad seems a pretty yet distant memory. But when her grandfather lapses into a coma after a fall at home\, the women he has terrorized for decades begin to speak\, and a brutal past comes to light. \nIn the lyrical patois of her mother and grandmother\, Krystal learns the long-held secrets of their family’s past\, and what it took for her foremothers to survive and find strength in themselves. The relief of sharing their stories draws the three women closer\, the music of their voices and care for one another easing the pain of memory.

DESCRIPTION:The UUA is pleased to announce that Breathe: A Letter to My Sons by Imani Perry (Beacon Press\, 2019) is the new Common Read. It is the book that our Listening to Writers of Color group has chosen for the month of November \nEmotionally raw and deeply reflective\, Imani Perry issues a challenge to society to see Black children as deserving of humanity. She admits fear and frustration for her African American sons in a society that is increasingly racist and at times seems irredeemable. However\, as a mother\, feminist\, writer\, and intellectual\, Perry offers an unfettered expression of love—finding beauty and possibility in life — and she exhorts her children and their peers to find the courage to chart their own paths and find steady footing and inspiration in Black tradition. The New York Times calls Breathe “an elixir of history\, ancestry and compassion\, which\, together\, become instruction … a parent’s unflinching demand\, born of inherited trauma and love\, for her children’s right simply to be possible.” \nBreathe offers a broader meditation on race\, gender\, and the meaning of a life well lived and is also an unforgettable lesson in Black resistance and resilience.
